about

This track is one of fourteen from the 2019 album, “Memoirs of Hakeford Wart”, issued by the Toronto-based label, Strawberry Rain - a 3LP, expanded version of the now extremely rare album of the same name, self-published in Cape Town, South Africa, by Peter Wale in 1972.

lyrics

SISTER MARY

Sister Mary was born on a Sunday afternoon,
So Mama and Papa decided to make her a nun.
When she was just sixteen, her parents sent her away
After completing high school, to a distant nunnery.

The little girl grew up expecting that she'd be a nun, someday.
The little girl grew up accepting,
So, whatever could she say?
Hey, hey, hey, hey - whatever could she say?

Sister Mary went walking down to the river, one day,
To smell the hilly air and lie in the freshly-cut hay.
But, on that day, Father Donald went walking down that way
To smell the hilly air and lie in the freshly-cut hay.

In his wildest dreams, he'd not expected
To meet her in this way.
His wildest dreams could not accept it,
So, whatever could he say?
Hey, hey, hey, hey - whatever could he say?

So, if perchance, you go walking down to the river, one day,
Just keep your eyes open - they might just come your way.
'Tis said they roam these hillsides, walking hand-in-hand,
They tell me it's wrong, but I think I understand.

For people will be people, in body and in mind,
And to deny them these things, I think is so unkind.
Hey, hey, hey, hey - together they flew away!

about

Peter Wale Ithaca, New York

Coming to the US in 1974 to further my songwriting aspirations cost me dear. “Your stuff won't sell “, US labels said. Well, this one, taken from the 4-song LP of a concert I gave in 1972, DID. 300 3-LP vinyl sets of the FULL concert were re-issued in 2019 and sold out (I've yet to be paid, BTW, and kinda late in the game). Could've seen that coming, I guess.
3 free plays/track.
