about
This track is one of fourteen from the 2019 album, “Memoirs of Hakeford Wart”, issued by the Toronto-based label, Strawberry Rain - a 3LP, expanded version of the now extremely rare album of the same name, self-published in Cape Town, South Africa, by Peter Wale in 1972.
lyrics
GOODBYE CAPE TOWN AND GOOD RIDDANCE
So Bishopsford was such a gas, my god, we only licked your ass
To blow your mind.
So ask me why the scene is dead -
I'll tell you, straight: it's in your head;
You're only blind.
In you, lies the way;
We can only play the tunes we know
To help you have your fun.
So, goodbye Cape Town, and good riddance -
You've got your Wakeford Hart man,
Your Sometime Lovin' man,
Your music-makin' man on the run.
Way back in nineteen seven-O,
We very nearly made it go with
Wakeford Hart.
And though we struggled hard, my friends,
The work we thought was just the end
Was just the start.
So, time moves on
And Wakeford Hart was gone -
We blew our magic journey to the Sun.
So, goodbye......
For far too long, I've thought too well
Of this, the mother city -
hell, I've got to go.
If Nicky Daly had to leave to make his music overseas,
Then, I don't know.
There's no point in staying on
When hope is all but gone,
Though, some might say I've only just begun.
So, goodbye......
The papers and S.A.B.C. kill all originality -
They're years behind.
With patriotic front at face,
They'd never think to save a place
For their own kind.
Though all our artists leave,
They'd never stop to grieve,
Or try to think just what they could have done.
So, goodbye......
And, Mandy Cohen, superstar,
I see you've travelled very far,
Since first we met.
Remember how it all began:
What friends you had, what songs you sang,
And don't forget.
I read the papers, too -
Give credit where it's due.
Respect your past and it will respect you.
When I look into your window,
What do you think I see?
When I look into your window,
All I see is mystery.
And, you know, that's very strange.
That’s very strange, very strange.
That’s a strange kind of friend to be;
A strange kind of friend to me.
The onus is on you, my friends,
To ultimately put an end
To standing still.
I know I will come back, someday,
Much stronger than I went away
To make the kill.
I hope it won't take long -
United, we can't go wrong -
The task lies with you all and not just some.
Coming to the US in 1974 to further my songwriting aspirations cost me dear. “Your stuff won't sell “, US labels said. Well,
this one, taken from the 4-song LP of a concert I gave in 1972, DID. 300 3-LP vinyl sets of the FULL concert were re-issued in 2019 and sold out (I've yet to be paid, BTW, and kinda late in the game). Could've seen that coming, I guess.
